Don’t Be Fooled By That Fancy Looking Certificate! Alzheimer’s Training MATTERS!

Don’t Fall For That Fancy Looking Certificate!
Alzheimer’s Training MATTERS!

Silly CertificateThese days more and more agencies are saying they “specialize” in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care. And the latest craze is for professionals to say they have suddenly become “certified” or are “Alzheimer’s educators”, seemingly overnight! And guess what?  They then use that fancy looking certificate to say they’ve  become experts or specialists in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care too!

Sadly, these “certifications” are pretty much bought and paid for. These so called certifications often come from for-profit organizations or companies that spring up all the time. They charge a fee of around $275.00-$375.00. The company usually says they are a “national” company and might even have an impressive website.

After they collect the fee, they have the “applicant” take a test at which point the company mails out a certificate indicating that this “professional” is now “certified” or can actually go out and “educate” others on Alzheimer’s disease. The newly “certified expert” can add a nice little logo from this “national company” on their website to help add “credibility”.

It’s so disturbing to me that not only do organizations like this exist, but that the people that call themselves professionals, actually try to pass these things off as legitimate.

Let me share with you one of the reasons why ElderCare at Home has been the leader in Alzheimer’s/dementia specific private duty home care services in South Florida for more than 15 years.

As licensed Nurse Registry, ElderCare at Home does not provide any individual training to the caregivers that we refer to our clients. However since our inception we have made darn sure that the caregivers we refer to our families, have received the best training and education available.

As recognized experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia care, it has always been our policy to make sure that our professional staff, as well as our referred caregivers, have received education or certification from local or national organizations, or individuals, that utilize the training available by two of the most well respected, independent, national Alzheimer’s organizations in our country today.

The Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. These not-for-profit organizations are renowned for their exceptional curriculum, training, testing, and certifications programs. Not to mention their dedication to helping and serving Alzheimer’s patients, families and caregivers.

Many years ago, The Alzheimer’s Association collaborated with other leaders in dementia care, to develop the evidenced-based Alzheimer’s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations which address the fundamental areas in quality dementia care including assessment, communication and understanding behavior, social needs and activities, proper nutrition, reducing pain, falls, wandering, restraint-free care, and end-of-life care. Designed for professional care providers working in either a residential community or an in-home environment, their certification program is undisputably the best in the nation.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s, Dementia Care Professionals of America (DCPA), training and certification program for dementia care specialists, is a rigorous program which more than 6300 people have completed. The successful completion of this course truly shows the public that the professional has reached a level of education that meets the highest standards as set forth by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Don’t be fooled by those certificates or those people that say they are “experts, educators, certified or trained” in Alzheimer’s care. Remember, that the quality of the training, and the integrity of the person or organization behind that training MATTERS!

As South Florida’s leader in exceptional Alzheimer’s/dementia specific care and services, ElderCare at Home has helped thousands of families meet their needs and the needs of their loved one. At ElderCare at Home we treat you and your family as though you are part of ours. With “Better Care, Better Price! and Better Value™” than anyone else!
