Essential Support for Male Caregivers
Although women still outnumber men in their role as primary caregiver, at ElderCare at Home we are seeing more men reach out to us and to the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center for help, support and guidance.
Caregiving is a lonely occupation for both men and women, but perhaps more so for men because some believe that society expects them to be confident, assertive, courageous and not to share their feelings readily. Particularly in a marriage there is the feeling to try to keep everything within the relationship private and not talk about it to anyone else—even family or close friends.
But it is very important that male caregivers get support. Everybody needs a chance to vent or whine once in a while with somebody who can give us a hug or offer guidance. The Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center offers male caregiver support groups as well as online and telephone support groups which for some caregivers, may be perfect for those who have demanding schedules and who want anonymity.
