Tuesday Tips for Caregivers – 6 Ways to Start Your Day Off Right
As a caregiver, it’s important that you take some time each day just for you. I know that caregivers find it hard to find even just a few minutes just for themselves. The first thing I’d like you to try to do this week is to make the decision to get up 15 minutes earlier, and then make the commitment to use time just for you!
This is your time and here are just a few things you can accomplish!
First, try stretching before you even get out of bed. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, then your arm. Then move on to the other arm. Then your toes, feet, ankles, and legs. Finally, end with a neck and back stretch that propels you out of the bed. You’ve just limbered up your muscles and joints and enhanced the flow of blood through your body, providing an extra shot of oxygen to all your tissues.
Second, Read a motivational quote. This can provide the framework for the day, a sort of self-talk that keeps you motivated in the right direction as opposed to the negative thinking that often comes from watching the morning news. Keep a few motivation books by your bed or reading chair so they are readily available each day.
Third, listen to some music or just sit quietly and meditate. This allows the creative thinking that takes place during the night to gel and form into a plan of action, grounding you for the rest of the day.
Fourth, write in your journal or start a new one. Whether it’s a place you go to release pent up feelings, or a place you go to record the things you are most grateful for, there are a lot of great benefits to journaling. You can make your own, buy one at a book store or use a simple composition book!
Fifth, make a list. What are your priorities for the day? What is most important? Jot it down! Getting it out of you head and onto paper helps keep focused on your goals, keeps you organized and will reduce stress.
Lastly, eat a healthy breakfast! Even if you just have some toast, a piece of fruit and some coffee. A good breakfast will give you the strength you need to get your day started off right!
